हिन्दी गद्य का विकास क्रमिक रूप से हुआ है। आरंभिक काल में ब्रज और अवधी का प्रभाव था, परंतु आधुनिक हिन्दी गद्य का वास्तविक विकास 19वीं शताब्दी में हुआ। इस विकास यात्रा में शुक्ल युग और शुक्लोत्तर युग का विशेष महत्व है।
